Begin with one picture and one sound
Open a book and choose “Make the Valley yours” before starting the story. Each prompt shows a picture focused on the action. The first ten books offer five featured sounds each; Waffle’s Birthday Party has six. A river splash belongs to a different moment from rustling leaves, a roof clatter or a birthday puff.
Try one sound together. Rub your palms for a rustle, make a soft click for Kite, or invent your own reply. The picture and the short suggestion give you somewhere to begin. You can skip a sound, use an available example, or simply read without recording anything. There is no score and no need to finish the whole menu.
Listen back, then choose the next sound
Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. The level meter moves as the microphone hears you. Stop when the sound is ready; the recorder plays the take back automatically. “Try again” lets you replace it. “Next sound” accepts it and moves on.
A short sound is often enough. Listen together before accepting it: can you hear the splash, the click or the little puff you wanted? It can be funny, quiet or unexpected. The story leaves room for your child’s version rather than asking for a perfect imitation.
Hear your sound in its own adventure
Accepted recordings play at their matching story cues as you use the page-by-page reader. The narration finishes its line before the new sound begins. If you pause the story, the sound pauses too; you can always replay a favourite moment.
Each book keeps its own takes in the same tab, so a birthday sound does not replace a roof sound in another adventure. Recordings are not uploaded. Reloading the page clears them, and “Forget all my sounds” removes them from the tab. A grown-up can help with the microphone and then settle in beside the reader.
Start with a familiar book tonight and let your child pick the sound that catches their imagination. One homemade sound can be the whole activity. Tomorrow, another adventure offers another picture to listen to.
